NSDC targets 3.3 mn for skill development

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 – The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) has set a target to impart skill training to 3.3 million youths in 2014-15.

The target committed for the current fiscal is nearly three and half times of what was set and achieved for 2013-14, said a statement from NSDC.

“The target for NSDC is to impart skill training to 3.3 million this year and I am sure the team will ensure that they are met. It is absolutely necessary to ensure that the industry be made a major partner in making India a skilled nation,” said Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs and Sports.

Commenting on the newly formed Ministry for Skill Development, Sonowal added, “We are in the process of activating the Ministry of Skill Development and are currently consulting with all major stakeholders including the private sector. We believe an effective andsustainable partnership between private and public sector would be crucial for this ambitious mission to be achieved. This Ministry, in every possible way, will assist and enable new, creative and self-sustaining mechanisms to ensure that goals set by thePrime Minister for a ‘Skill India’ are achieved.”

In 2013-14, NSDC crossed its target and brought 1.05 million youth into the skill eco-system. The total number of people trained in 2013-14 was 1.3 million, including the number of people imparted training under the National Skill Certification and Reward Scheme, also known as STAR scheme.

S Ramadorai, Chairman of NSDC said, “While we are fully focused on delivering the number of skilled people as promised at the start of every year, we are also completely conscious of the quality of the manpower we deliver. We have robust and well-defined quality checking processes that ensures that the skilled hands we deliver meet the needs of the industry.”
